My school is big into Accelerated Reader. As a librarian, I’m in charge of keeping track of Accelerated Reader. Third grade as a whole was not motivated to meet their goal, so I came up with this A.R. point tracker to motivate them to read more. The winning class from each grade level wins a surprise at the end of the 6 weeks. I take all point circles down at the end of the 6 week grading period.
To motivate 3rd grade even more, 1st grade made a bet with them. The winning grade level’s teachers gets safety and the other grade level’s teachers gets a pie in their face.
I used string to hold up all the circles. You can use ribbon too. I hot glued Velcro on the string so it would be easier to put on and take off the circles. I check my A.R. reports every Friday, and update the points. This picture was taken on week 2. I look at the total points and place the correct amount of points on the string. The circles go by 10’s because I didn’t have enough room to go by 5’s. Only kindergarten goes by 5’s. The winning class had 260 points last 6 weeks.
I placed this in a place where all classes would see it on a daily basis. It’s amazing how competitive the students and even the teachers are. I had tons of compliments from the staff about how motivating this is for the students.
You can use this for the entire school or just the students in your class. I take pictures to remind students how far they have come since the beginning of the 6 weeks. String and Velcro not included.
All circles are 2 inches. The circles go from 5 to 300. Each colored circle, has a set of blank ones too incase you want to write the number instead.
