I use these with PK-1st graders. I explain the assignment they're going to complete while referring to the cards. I laminated them and placed a small magnet on the back to place them on the board. As the students are working and forget what to do next, they refer to the board so as to know what task comes after completing another. This way they don't ask and show you their work after EVERY thing they do before completing the assignment. It takes practice like everything, but once they get it, it works great on minimizing teacher help. Great for ESL/ELL learners. I also have them in Spanish.
