Report writing made easy! Write narrative student reports in a flash!

I built this little tool for my own use to make writing student report cards easier and less time-consuming. At this point, it's saving me many, many hours each time report writing season comes around!

The Student Report Writer contains an extensive list of comments that I frequently use in my reports, which are customizable to allow creating personal, individualized results. The comments are closely tied to standards and expectations for children in kindergarten, first grade and second grade, and address key academic areas as well as behavior and work habits.

With Student Report Writer you can:
• Insert a student’s name before previewing comments
• Automatically update the appropriate gender pronoun
• Select adjective suggestions to describe your students in greater detail
• Tailor comments to suit your needs
• Reduce grammar and spelling mistakes
• Keep track with a word and character count

With the basic version, around 150 comments are included, while the full version contains more than 400 comments.

When I'm writing reports, I generally consider the following points to use in writing and organizing comments:

• What is the student's general attitude towards learning the subject?
• In general, how well are they meeting grade-level expectations? Do they need support, or exceed expectations?
• Which standards are they meeting and/or developing?
• What goals have I identified for future learning?
• What supporting details and anecdotal evidence can I provide?

The inspiration for these comments comes from the Common Core, AERO Standards, the IB Primary Years Program, 6+1 Traits, the work of Fountas and Pinnell, as well as reports I've written in the past.

To use the Report Writer, all you need is a web browser. I have tested the tool in the following browsers:

• Chrome
• Firefox
• Safari
• Opera
• Internet Explorer 9+

This tool is an HTML file that you’ll need to save directly to your computer. Although it operates in a web browser, it does not save, store, or transmit any information, so privacy issues are not a concern. In order to save your comments, you need to copy them to a separate document.

If you are using Windows XP, please make sure you open the report writer in Chrome or Firefox as it won't work in Internet Explorer 8.
