Incorporating student self-assessment is truly essential in preparing students for life outside of the classroom. Reflecting on the benefits of student self-assessment, I believe it will be beneficial to have students evaluate their knowledge and abilities on a continual basis. With this in mind, I have designed and a student self-assessment activity that could possibly be used throughout a unit/mini-unit of mathematics, or modified for any topic essentially. The plan for implementation is to provide the students with the activity at the beginning of the section, check their progress towards completion (as well as what they believe to be their personal strengths & areas of need) at certain points throughout, and collect the final product after a formal summative assessment. This assignment has the potential to effectively guide students through the self-assessment process.
*Note that some of the questions within this assessment are specifically focused on common core geometry - triangles and properties & theorems related to triangles. However, those specific questions can be modified to pretty much any area of any subject.
