Spelling Counts! As teachers, we tend to overlook spelling errors on daily work but expect perfect spelling on papers and projects. This does a great disservice to our learners because as we are all too aware, practice makes permanent, not perfect. We should encourage students to be mindful of their spelling at all times.
My students use these tracking pages in their writing notebooks to keep track of words they've misspelled on ANY work they hand in. I simply highlight any misspelled or misused words in their work; the students record the highlighted words in their notebooks. It is up to the student to find the correct spelling or usage. Students can also monitor the frequency of individual misspellings. Included in the download are four different styles of the tracking pages. They are sized smaller to fit in an interactive notebook, but you can easily adjust the size to fit an 81/2 x 11 sheet of paper by using your printer's PDF printing setup dialogue.
When students are accountable for their spelling, spelling improves. I do not grade the trackers; they are simply a monitoring tool for students. I do, however, only give grades to papers with corrected spelling errors. At first, it is a bit of a hassle to get students to correct their errors, but as time goes by, students learn to be more mindful of their spelling the first time. Which is, after all, the ultimate goal!
