This is a great project for students to understand line better. It can be done in graphic arts or by hand. It incorporates math, marketing and advertising. Once students have completed their boards they can upload them to a variety of sites online that allow them to purchase their design as a skateboard or to even sell their designs online. Its an excellent ice breaker assignment for teens, as it creates interest. This set includes a drawing packet, worksheets, student samples, resources and instructables that can be printed and handed out to students.
I always start the project off by showing a video called 'Freelin' online. The kids talk about why they skate and it gives insight to the culture. I also ask students to define the demographic and to keep this in mind while designing.
Week 1 - Defining your target market, exploring skate culture. Great video resources : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwGjLjI_HJM&ibss=1
Week 2 - discussing line, have students start collection Zen-tangles on their worksheet. great video resource: ABC of Zentangle online. You can play this on mute with music to create a comfortable and fun environment while students collect line designs.
Week 3 - Start sketching out ideas for boards on worksheets
Week 4 - finalize designs. photograph and upload to a skateboard creation site like disruptsports.com, boardpusher.com or sk8factory.com.
