This is a GREAT back to school activity. Students create "starts" about themselves. They put their name in the middle of the star, then draw five things about themselves in the points of the star.
You can learn a ton about your students very quickly. Obviously you learn the five things the student put on their star. This is always very interesting. This allows me to form connections with students I would otherwise not interact with much. For example, a boy drew a puppy because he got a goldendoodle puppy this summer. I also got a goldendoodle puppy this summer. I will use this to talk to the student.
You also learn very quickly who are the good artists and who are the good writers. And you see who will struggle with writing or drawing.
This is a great first grade for the year. Everyone can earn 10/10 if you decide to grade it. Students love starting they year off with an "A!"
The stars are then hung on the wall for everyone to see all year! I teach American history, so our stars are on red and blue construction paper. Parents love to see their child's' star when they visit during Open House.
