Everyone does trips differently. Some people take any student or parent who wants to go. Some people take students only. Some make students apply to go (so they can weed out any potential problems well ahead of time!). I only take students because I’ve heard all too often that parents are harder to take than teenagers, and I do make them apply. After students receive their acceptance letters, and we start our monthly trip meetings, I do make students and parents sign a behavior contract form. It is a LOT of work to take teenagers abroad—and do it well—and parents have placed their children in your hands. That’s a pretty big compliment….and a huge responsibility. Because of that, I make sure that students realize that they have all the time in the world to have a “party” trip abroad, but that this is not that trip. Their safety MUST be my #1 concern, and I will not have that jeopardized. They sign contracts regarding drug and alcohol use abroad, and if they are caught with either, they will be on the next flight home, at their parents’ expense. Tough, but it’s 100% a safety issue.
