It's important to me to have my 3rd graders keep their own dictionaries. More than anything I want them to be useful! Using this dictionary my students are able to record new or interesting words in "semi" alphabetical order. Rather than recording words in the order that they discover them they record them by letter like an authentic dictionary. This is much more useful and students go back and find words that they need again and again.
In the back of this dictionary is also a thesaurus for use during reading and writing. It is the perfect place to keep synonyms for words like happy. It will liven up writing with words like hushed and exclaimed instead of said.
Simply print the pages back to back, staple in the center and provide one for each student.
