Do your students really know what is expected of them in their writing activities?
These writing checklists provide the students with a list of expectations to review during when they say they are finished. The student can check off what they have included in their writing sample before they pass it in.
Self assessment is a wonderful teaching and learning tool and by providing checklists of expectations, students are taking ownership of their learning. They have a framework to show them how to improve.
Since the writing process is so broad at the grade 1-2 level, I have included checklists for each term. The upper grades (3-6) have one checklist in which the teacher or students can highlight the term in which the self assessment is used.
Ongoing self assessment is also possible by having the students choose a writing piece monthly and attach the checklist to it before it is placed in the writing portfolio.
Students can have a timeline of their progress.
