Familiarizing students with a rubric can raise test scores, but rubrics can be overwhelming for students to use. Eliminate the intimidation by having students look only at two boxes: "where I am now" and "where I will be." Students then identify ONE skill they'd like to work on for their next assignment and explain how they will reach their goal.
This 5-page document has one page for each level of student. For example, if a student is at a score of "two", then they only look at the "two" and "three" score requirements on the Nevada High School Proficiency Exam rubric. There is a space for teacher comments and student goals at the bottom. The reflection can be used for scoring, student reflection, or peer evaluation on any writing assignment. Although it is based on the NHSPE, it could be used by any teacher in any classroom to improve student writing.
