We all know how stressful SEP’s can be. There is always a million things to get done and have prepared. If you’re like me you feel like no matter how well you prepare you aren’t always able to discuss a child’s progress accurately to parents.
To fix this problem my genius co-worker introduced me to ”walking report cards” or basically student led SEP’s. So I put together what we decided to do for SEP’s this year. This can be adapted from 3rd grade fairly easily!
We set up stations around the room using the station posters included in this file. We made appropriate copies for each station. We also didn’t want the walking SEP to take too long. So we previously trained students on exactly what they were to do as they led their parents around the room. We also had them do the writing portion in class. It gave us time to grade it. We just used a writing sample that we were already doing in class. Then we graded it using a simple rubric.
We scheduled the parents 10 minutes apart. It is perfect because if they don’t show up on time or they show up at the wrong time they can just hop in and get started. They had their students lead them from station to station. There is no specific order so they just went to a station that wasn’t being used. Parents score and grade their students performance at each station. It gives parents a great idea of where their student is at, where they should be, and what to do to help them at home!
At the end they collect their SEP report card and a formal report card from the teacher. We always ask if they have any questions for us. And occasionally I will have extra practice worksheets and reading passages for parents to take home to work on with students.
We used this for fall SEP’s! I’ll post the winter SEP online near time for winter SEP’s! Enjoy!
