Turn the tables and let your students see what it's like to run the class.

If that sounds terrifying, I understand. However, this is my number 1 empathy builder for difficult classes. It's interesting to see the kids who normally throw everyone off task suddenly realize what it's like to be the one trying to keep people on task! After students try to teach, I often find it a lot easier to teach them.

What you get

-A step-by-step guide to creating a lesson (for students)

  • Students write "Students will be able to____" (SWBAT) statement
  • Students decide how to teach lesson and choose materials
  • Students create an assignment that must measure SWBAT statement

-A rubric to assess the lesson. Students are graded based on the following:

  • Clarity of objective (SWBAT)
  • Classroom management
  • Quality of lesson
  • Quality of assignment
  • Duration of lesson + assignment (adjustable)
  • Group participation

The rubric is easily adjustable for your needs.

Currently, this handout contains prompts for teaching elements of a research paper; however, you can easily alter the prompts such that students must teach whatever you ask them to teach.
