This personailized student dictionary will make your students more responsible for their own learning and it will help them to use great word choice in their own writing.
If you teach vocabulary word weekly, you can have your students put the words in their dictionaries so they can refer back to them. Many students may forget the words and their meaning after a week or two after.
During reading workshop when a students encounters a word they do not know, they can clarify the word using context clues and checking with a dictionary. Then they can put their word in their own personalized dictionary for safe keeping.
You may even want students to place their spelling words in their dictionary so they will know not jut their spelling, but also their meaning.
During Writing Workshop have the students see how many words they can use from their dictionaries. Have them underline the words as they go. Then watch their word choice improve!
At the end of the year, the students can bring home their dictionaries to continue to use. Some students may even continue to add to their dictionaries.
You will want to make sure you make multiple copies of each letter before putting your dictionary together.
