Oh boy, I can't tell you how many times students flunk the first test only to say: "But I studied so hard! I read the textbook seven times! All night before the test!". Others will say they felt great leaving the test, meaning everything looked familiar, but they never really tested themselves before the test. So to encourage healthy study habits right off the bat I have learned to give them this one-page worksheet as their first homework assignment. I made sure to incorporate the pomodoro method and many suggested self-testing activities that do not always occur to students.
I am finding this exercise works great as an initial smell-the-coffee moment! Throughout the semester I will ask them to fill one out as a log before coming to office hours. It's a great diagnostic tool and conversation starter!
