This film companion sheet created by Contextual Classroom is to be used in conjunction with the academy award winning film, Shakespeare in Love. This activity would work well as an introduction or closure of a Shakespeare unit.
I used this activity with my students, who had just finished reading Twelfth Night and Romeo and Juliet. The film uses material from these two plays the most.
This guide asks students to compare the historical figures to their fictional counterparts on screen. Students view and discuss short biographies of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlow, and Queen Elizabeth. Then after viewing the film, students are asked to reflect on the creative liberties and artistic decisions that the filmmakers made to bring the historical figures to life on screen and entertain the audience with the fictional story.
Students could view the short bios at home or watch during class and discuss with peers.
