You can hit so many standards within this 2 day lesson, all while your students are engaged - it's awesome!
The purpose of this lesson is for students to use Native American origin narratives as mentor texts for their own origin narrative.
First, the teacher uses the PPT to model a close reading of "The Earth on Turtle's Back". Then, students are put into groups of 4, and each group member selects a different Native American narrative to read. They each read their narratives, and complete the summary quadrant notes handout by sharing their summaries with one another and discussing each text.
After students have done so, the teacher asks "what common elements do all of these narratives share?" and students write their responses in the center diamond of the handout.
Finally, after studying various narratives, students get to write their OWN origin narrative where they explain the origin of something in their modern world (i.e., snapchat, instagram, selfies, etc.).
This is such a great lesson - I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!
