When children “stuff” their emotions; they end up expressing their emotions in unhealthy ways. This holiday themed activity will teach children the importance of talking about emotions instead of keeping them “stuffed” inside of them. This activity includes 12 different emotion stockings in 4 different colors (with and without pictures; colored and b/w). Also included are 216 situation cards and several blank cards for the school counselor, therapist, or child to write their own situation. Children will read through the situation cards and will decide how that situation would make them feel. Students will “stuff” the card inside the stocking that describes how they would feel. Children will take turns pulling out one of the situation cards and discuss the emotion that corresponds with the situation. This activity is a great way to talk about feelings and healthy ways to cope with feelings. This activity teaches empathy, perspective taking, and emotional intelligence.
Stockings include the following emotions: Happy, Proud, Calm, Excited, Worried, Frustrated, Embarrassed, Confused, Disappointed, Sad, Bored, Angry, Scared. Each emotion comes in a colored and b/w stocking (with picture) as well as a colored and b/w stocking (no picture---so that children can draw their own picture of the emotion).
***While this is not in anyway connected to Michelle Wiener’s Zones of Regulation Curriculum, the color do correspond to the different emotional levels that are used in the curriculum.
