Product Description
Help students develop an awareness of authors' unique styles through close reading and short imitation exercises!
Instructions: Read two passages on a common theme written in two different styles. For instance, check out Sherman Alexie's "Indian Education" and Amy Tan's "Mother Tongue" for some great nonfiction analysis. Students use the chart on each side of this handout to note examples of each author's syntax, diction, sentence structure, tone, and overall language. Then, the student writes a brief paragraph on the same theme twice--each way imitating the authors' distinct styles. This is a simple tool you can use over and over again!
