This unit contains 10 PowerPoints which cover the culture, resources, government, conflicts, politics and economics of Sub-Saharan Africa. Accompanying comprehension questions can be used to assess understanding of PowerPoints and readings. Addditional printable documents include African maps, information and examples of African folktales and information and questions about the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Projects including researching an African country, writing a research paper and creating a visual representation of their knowledge of the chosen country. This unit teaches students about shanty towns in Africa using PowerPoints, information, activity/projects, study guides and tests. The students complete a hands on shanty town project in which they utilize information on the make-up of shanty town and create their own in class. In addition, notable African leaders are discussed in biography form, followed by projects (i.e. Nelson Mandela poster, etc.). Facts and history of slavery are discussed and students complete a WebQuest about the realities of slavery. Overall, this unti throughly covers Sub-Saharan Africa using PowerPoints, study guides, assessments, projects and activities.
