Students have much success learning about diversity and subcultures by completing this lesson. I outline/explain my teaching when you purchase this package. You get a 5 page class/homework assignment with much explained information about various artists and questions that lead to solid connections about how studying Rock music allows students to become more diverse.
The link to the presentation is given on the Word document that you can alter. On page 1 of the document is my instructions/explanations.
Page 2-5 are also editable and can be used for any style of grading.
Students view the presentation of about 20+ artists that range from Elvis to Linkin Park. Music spans decades from the 50's-2000 era. Live performances are prominent so students really get a feel for how the band looks and sounds, which are vital components of subcultures.
The discussion always centers around how these artists grow and become more diverse, yet still have similar sounds and roots of music. Students also begin to see how people they think are so "different" from them are in fact much similar than they imagine.
I've come to learn that this activity is successful when students email me after class asking for the link to the presentation to show their parents. It truly has become a really enjoyable class experience. I have spent hours doing research on the band and finding a place where they deserve to be placed in the historic timeline. You won't be disappointed!
