These dot cards are a great resource to use when subitizing. Subitizing is the ability to quickly identify the total amount in a group without counting one-to-one. Students will eventually learn to quickly see groups within the total amount to help them figure out the total amount. I use these as a math warm-up before whole group instruction. I show a card for three seconds and then put it down. Students show me a thumbs up if they know the total amount or thumb sideways if they are not sure. I hold up the same card for three more seconds and put it down again. Students, again, show me a thumbs up or sideways. I have students with thumbs up share how they subitized. Students share groupings that they saw to help them count on to figure out the total amount. Subitizing not only helps students figure out the total amount quickly, but helps them realize and see that different groupings can total the same amount!
These dot cards are very ENGAGING for students because it allows them to discover the total amount by seeing different groupings of dots!
