Subitizing is when you look at a group of objects and know how many are there without counting. Students will first be introduced to this skills using common patterns such as dice, move to 10 frames and then onto scattered configurations.
After printing and laminating my owl 10 frame cards the teacher flashes the card to the students for 3 seconds and then the students tell their partners what they saw. “I saw 3 on top and 2 on bottom”, or “I saw 2 pink and 3 green so I saw 5 altogether”. As this skill is added to a classes daily routine students ability to visualize numbers and equations increase.
You can even print off multiple sets of cards and have students quiz each other in centers.
