This cut-and-paste activity will help students identify the Subject and the Predicate of each sentence, and the different parts of speech in each part of the sentence. The first 16 pages of the packet contain sentences with more complex words in order to challenge your higher students expand their vocabulary. The remaining 16 pages use simpler vocabulary, which can help your students practice the use of synonyms. English Language Learners will also benefit from this activity because they will be able to place each word its correct category and understand how the use of correct syntax helps the sentence make sense. The last part of the activity consists of writing the sentence after all the parts of speech have been placed in the correct category. I used this activity with a group of second graders and it worked to perfection. The kids liked the fact that it wasn’t a worksheet. They really loved the hands-on aspect of it. I would recommend you also try this as a literacy station. You can print them on card stock, laminate them and use them year after year. The kids can work with a partner or independently. In either case, they will have fun building their sentences.
