Anyone out there still a believer in sentence diagramming? While there is a variety of grammar teaching approaches at our fingertips, I still see a lot of merit in teaching students to understand the grammatical function of each word in a sentence. It's such a crucial building block for growing writers, as they learn to avoid errors and write with style and voice.
This collection of resources contains materials I've used in a 7th Grade English Language Arts class to teach students to identify and diagram simple and compound subjects and verbs. This is actually the very first mini-unit in a long line of lessons about more complicated topics, so all the students are asked to do in these activities is to identify only the subject and verb in sentences.

And while this mini-unit was designed for Middle School, I think it could easily be used or adapted for younger or older students!
