Olivie has a crush on Jean-Luc, but she's too shy to do anything about it. So Olivie and her best friend Suzette concoct a plan to get Jean-Luc to go to the prom with her. Will their plan work? Unfortunately, Jean-Luc has zero interest in Olivie since he has, unbeknowest to her, already asked her brother to go to the prom with him! But, there's a happy ending for all since he sets Olivie up with his best friend.
I use this document as a way to introduce the topic of the Subjunctive in French to my students. The teacher presents the story to them, and they see different verbs in the subjunctive used throughout 28 different sentences in the story.
There is then a worksheet containing all of the sentences in the story that contain the subjunctive. Students analyze the sentences and determine their similarities (different subjects, two clauses separated by que, and a verb in the second clause in a 'weird' form). They then deduce which verb it is.
This is a great introduction to this topic, and I then explain the different purposes of each of the sentences (expressing obligation, desires, opinion, etc.). Students then see that this grammar topic has a real purpose and we spend the next several days looking at each topic of the subjunctive. This document does not teach the formation or rules, but it is a way to let students see the grammar topic in context that will keep them interested and engaged.
At the end of our subjunctive unit, I have students write their own story (similar to this one) to showcase their mastery of this grammatical mood.
This is in a powerpoint document. However, the graphics are all locked in pdf since they were purchased from other sellers. The text is locked too to preserve the formatting since it was made on a Mac.
