This reading and drawing activity is a complete lesson plan to leave for a substitute teacher working in the secondary classroom. I have used this before in my 6-8 art classroom, but it would also work perfectly in a reading or design class.
Students will read an high-interest, informational text that presents what may be the world's skinniest house. A copy of the article is included, complete with pictures. Students then complete reading comprehension questions. Next, students use critical thinking and creativity to draw and design their own "skinny house" on the handouts provided. A teacher answer key is provided, as well.
I've also provided a shortened link to the original online news article, found on the kid's news website, Dogo News. The webpage includes interactive vocabulary terms, perfect for displaying with a projector or interactive whiteboard.
The overview page (with instructions for the sub) is formatted so that you can choose how your students will complete the activity. For example, you can check either "Read independently", "Read with a partner", "Read with a small group", or write in your own instructions under "other". The lesson should take 30-45 minutes, depending on which options you choose.
I've also included my "Notes for the Substitute" forms as well as my "Substitute Teacher Report Form" for you convenience.
