Lesson 2: Poetry Writing! Picture Poetry The Eye and I

One of the most fun activities of Edgar Allan Poe Week is Poetry Writing: Picture Poetry. Students write a free verse poem about a picture of their choice. They will choose the point of view of the object or person telling the first person story about the picture. All poems are written in first person.

Four examples of student poems are included.

An exit pass for students to complete at the conclusion of the activity is included in the powerpoint as a ping.

Students may have the option to share their poems during Author's Chair or teachers may opt to display the poems in the classroom or hallway.

Lesson 3: Poetry Writing! Gothic Poetry
Poetry Writing! Students will study Gothic Poetry during Edgar Allan Poe Week. Class activities include watching clips of Poe’s poetry. The link for “Eldorado” includes an analysis of the poem’s meaning and how it is written. Tips for writing Gothic Poems give students an outline for writing their own poem.
