Subtract 100 Puzzle: Kids read clues and mentally subtract 100 to solve the Pot of Gold mystery picture for St. Patrick’s Day. Using the lettered rows and numbered columns on the grid, students locate each square and color it as the clues direct. Because of a tricky leprechaun, each clue number is 100 too high so students must mentally subtract 100 from each number (per Common Core State Standard 2.NBT.8: …mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900.) There are about 125 clues so students will get plenty of practice.
A printable grid is included, or students can make their own from graph paper. After solving the puzzle, students write and/or draw what they would do with a pot of gold. The Clues page can be printed and laminated so students can use dry erase markers to mark off the clues as they work. A Solution Poster is also included. Download the Preview for a peek at the pages, which are not as high resolution as the actual product.
A self-running PowerPoint version of this puzzle is available here.
