Subtract 100 Puzzle: Kids read the clues and mentally subtract 100 while watching this self-running PowerPoint show to solve the Pot of Gold mystery picture for St. Patrick’s Day. Using the lettered rows and numbered columns on the grid, students locate each square and color it as the clues direct. Because of a tricky leprechaun, each clue number is 100 too high so students must mentally subtract 100 from each number (per Common Core State Standard 2.NBT.8: …mentally subtract 10 or 100 from a given number 100-900.)
A printable grid is included, or students can make their own from graph paper. After solving the puzzle, students write and/or draw what they would do with a pot of gold. The slideshow takes about 20 minutes...download the Preview to see how it works.
