Subtracting on a number line is a great way to help students visualize numbers and understand what happens when we subtract tens and ones. Students will build their number sense by using different strategies to subtract 2-digit numbers, learning that there are many ways to THINK about numbers and different ways to subtract them.
If you've used my "Adding Two-Digit Numbers Using a Number Line" packet, your children will already be familiar with counting up on the number line to add tens and ones. When you introduce subtraction, however, they will realize that they have less flexibility with where to start and which numbers to subtract! In fact, subtracting two-digit numbers may require more teaching and practice than addition – just as subtracting single digit numbers often takes more instruction than adding them.
This packet includes SIX "Teacher's Notes" lesson pages with complete demonstrations of THREE different subtraction strategies to use in your lessons.
There are TWO kinds of number lines: 0-100 with tick marks on the ones, and 0-100 with only the tens marked. You will find SIX 2-sided student pages for each of the number lines, and you can use all 12 student pages with your class since the problems are different on all pages.

My children learned that there were lots of ways to tackle these subtraction problems and arrive at the correct answer. This discovery gave them much more confidence when subtracting using the number lines and when working with 2-digit numbers in other ways.
