This unit uses $1, $10 and $100 bills and a place value mat to help children learn to subtract within 1000 by borrowing and regrouping. It can be used with above average 1st graders, on-level 2nd graders, review for 3rd graders or as an intervention solution for struggling 4th graders.

Trading in a $10 for 10 $1s or a $100 for 10 $10s is a concept that many younger students already understand, so transferring that concept to place value and regrouping is a an easy transition. This unit can be especially helpful for students who are struggling with the concept of composing or decomposing tens and hundreds.

I have tried to make this as easy and straightforward as possible for students by using step-by-step instructions and visual aids (i.e. showing an equals sign with a $10 bill on one side and 10 $1 bills on the other, and then using a thick red line to mark out the $1 bills that we are subtracting). The students also receive printed bills and a large place value mat that they can use when working the task cards, and instructions for filling out the task card recording sheet (also great for helping parents if this is assigned as a take-home project). Answer sheets and instructions are included for teachers!

In summary, this mini-unit includes:

- 4 pages of step-by-step problems to work with students
- Printable place value mats for students
- Printable $100, $10 and $1 bills for students to use with their place value mat to work the task cards.
- 24 task cards for practice
- Student task card recording sheets
- Teacher task card recording sheets with answers
- Student instructions for filling out the task card recording sheets

You can print out a set for each student to laminate a single set to use in a math center.
