Play money helps kids conceptualize subtracting across zeros and learn the purpose for the subtraction algorithm. This PowerPoint presentation moves students through each step with funny money. (The product includes generic class cash and an editable version allows you to make personalized play money.)
Instruction begins with children organizing class cash into “banks” on their desks. Beginning with one thousand dollar bill, the presentation guides them in exchanging/regrouping their bills until they have enough to take away a given number. Animated slides show students how their exchanges correspond to the subtraction algorithm.
After the first problem, the presentation guides them in solving a second problem. Each step is again explained. Finally, ten animated practice problems take them through the step-by-step process of regrouping with the common algorithm. At this point, children may continue working with their class cash or, if/when they’re ready, begin solving problems using only the algorithm.
