Introduce subtraction to your students with everyone's favorite cat, Pete! Based off of the book "Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons" by Eric Litwin and James Dean, this lesson plan guides you in creating work-mats for your students to practice subtracting real objects. Use buttons, coins, or counting chips to let students physically subtract the buttons from Pete's coat. Templates for creating your own workouts are included, as is a recording sheet for students' work, step-by-step lesson plans with pictures, and suggestions for differentiating the lesson. Please have small counters to resemble buttons and dice available to make the lesson most successful. Construction paper and googly eyes are also suggested to make the work mats.
