This worksheet gives independent practice for students subtracting positive and negative integers. The concept of subtracting a negative can be difficult to explain. Two different strategies are used: simplify and solve method and Keep Change Change (KCC) method. The investigation about Mr. Fleming’s Magic Temperature Cubes provides an opportunity to discuss subtracting positive/negative integers and zero pairing. The concept to be learned from this worksheet is a-(-b)=a+b. The focus is in three separate steps: Dividing or separating the terms of each expression, simplifying the signs and solving the expression. Variations includes: 1st term in parenthesis, more than two terms and problems containing additive inverses. A modified worksheet is included that has one additional problem completed. Encourage students to use the commutative property of the addition to make the problems easier to solve; this is to help students to analyze solutions. Two extra credit problems are given for stretch learning.
