Using the acronym, Keep, Change, Change (KCC) to rewrite subtraction expressions using its additive inverse, this graphic organizers students to recognize subtracting integers as the addition of those integers. If this is a strategy you are unfamiliar with, it is to KEEP the sign of the first integer, to CHANGE the subtraction sign to an addition sign, and to CHANGE the sign of the second number.
This graphic organizer has been EXTREMELY helpful to my students through the years to a) help them recognize patterns when subtracting integers and b) to begin recognizing a single "minus sign" as the equivalent of a "negative sign." (I don't know about you, but I would be a millionaire if I had a penny for every time a student asked me, "Wait, is that a minus or negative sign?!)
As students begin working with subtracting integers, I have them keep the graphic organizer out to the side to reference. It is perfect for students to reference at later points in the yer or when reviewing at the End of the Year in order to review and "reteach" themselves.
