My math lessons focus on student engagement and participation. I focus on developing conceptual understanding using manipulatives, specific language and activities. My lesson plans also include differientiated tasks that cater to the varying levels in the classroom.
1) To understand how to subtract integers using integer chips.
2) To discover patterns for subtraction of integers that can be made into generalizations or rules.
Using the chips can be a great way for students to really understand the challenging concept of subtracting negative integers. I also find they are very helpful for visual and hands-on learners and they lead students to finding the patterns and generalizations.
