A great activity for students learning subtraction, or as a review for older students. Students develop their addition skills but also their inductive reasoning skills.
Included are three different 4 by 4 subtraction scrambles. The puzzle is put together by matching the correct answer next to the problem, forming a 4 x 4 grid. Roman numerals are included in the middle of the pieces so that a teacher can quickly check if the student is correct.
The three different versions can be used in three consecutive lessons. The easy version gives away the corner and end pieces, making putting the puzzle together easier. The medium difficulty does not give away the corner and end pieces, but at the same time many answers are not repeated. Finally, the hard difficutly puzzle makes fitting the pieces together as hard, if not harder, than the addition problems. This version really tests and develops a students critical thinking and inductive reasoning skills because many of the answers are repeated. For example, four of the subtraction problems may have an answer of 10, but there are four different pieces that have 10 as an answer. Only one will fit correctly, so students will have to use their inductive reasoning skills to complete the puzzle.
Your purchase includes a PDF file of the puzzles. Although it isn't necessary for use, it is recommended you print the puzzle on cardstock and have it laminated prior to cutting it out so it can last for years to come.
