Product Description
This activity set was designed to help students develop the concept of subtraction as a “take away” process.

The set includes Counting Mats that represent the minuend (the whole). Each mat represents a number from 1 to 10.

The activity set also includes task cards that prompt the students to figure out subtraction equations, subtrahend markers that help the students find the solution for the equations, worksheets for the students to record their findings, and a poster with student-friendly directions that you can use when adding this set to a math center.

How to use this activity set?

1 - Print and laminate all the counting mats, task cards and subtrahend markers. Print as many worksheets as the number of students in your class (if using in a center setting, I’d recommend printing some extras so students can work on this activity whenever they wish to).

2 – The students choose a random task card from the pile you provided them with (if you want to focus on certain numbers you can exclude the cards for the remaining numbers).

3 – The students read the prompt and identify the mat needed by looking at the number on the top right corner.

4 – The students select the mat they need and then read the equation on the task card.

5 – The students record the unsolved equation on their worksheet.

6 – Using the subtrahend markers, the students cover as many snowmen as the number determined on the equation. Initially and until the students get familiar with the process, you should explain that this is the number of snowmen that are melting. This also means that they are taking away that number (subtrahend) from the whole (minuend).

7 – The students count the remaining snowmen and record the answer on their worksheet.
