This is a fun activity where your kids won't even know they are working on a math concept!
In my experience, students sometimes have a hard time grasping the idea of subtraction unless they can see it with their own eyes. With this game, they can actually see and hopefully understand what it means to subtract or "take away."
Have children set up bowling pins (or paper cups or plastic bottles or whatever you have available) in triangle layout. Then roll a small ball and see what you are able to knock down. After each turn, take time to write the subtraction sentence. Remind students to count how many they start with, how many were knocked over or subtracted, and how many are left in the end.
This download includes 2 levels - one with 6 pins and one with 10. Use whatever level would be appropriate for your class's expertise.
