This packet includes 4 activities for students to practice comparing numbers all with a pet shop theme. Students will use these activities to see the real life connection in why we need to learn subtraction to make wise decision. One of the activities does have students make a collar for an animal from home using pipe-cleaners and beads, however you could still do the rest of the unit without doing that activity. That particular project also has student measure using any unit of your choice. The final project students will work on is to use subtraction to make a budget for two different pets. Students will then decide which pet and supplies they would like to buy and will create a poster to share with the class. This project uses basic subtraction facts and teaches students the strategies of counting up, counting back, using double facts, and drawing a picture. This is a great project for younger students that is sure to engage them in a fun way! There is also a pre and post test included and the activities are all differientiated. There are grade level subtraction problems using basic facts and enrichment problems for students who pass the pretest.
