This is a card game students can play in pairs, it's a version of war. Students pull 3 cards each. They then arrange these cards to make two different numbers: they're aiming to get the biggest difference between these two numbers.
It works best if you don't actually tell them the trick (to make the smallest number and largest number possible) and let them figure it out themselves as they play.
As they play, they constantly need to practise vertical subtraction with renaming/trading to figure out the difference between their numbers.
Grade 2s could use just 2 cards. Grade 5/6s could use a decimal point.
