Do your first or second grade students have trouble transferring their strategies for taking from ten or counting on when subtracting basic facts? Many students need a brief reminder of these strategies in order to build automaticity with basic facts. We want students to use strategies but they often get stuck when trying to recall basic facts. To help build this bridge between strategies and recall, show your student(s) the fact on the side without models. If he or she cannot recall the answer, show the back of the card. Although it does not contain the answer, it does contain strategies for taking from a ten that will help your student remember the fact.
