Subtraction Fact Mental Strategy Anchor Wall Charts

This is a set of ten anchor wall charts (plus single page charts for a title heading, doubles facts, and make ten facts) for applying mental strategies to subtract basic facts within 20 in first and second grade.

Each chart includes visual and verbal cues to enhance explicit strategy instruction while providing support for students to recall and apply these. The strategies included are Subtract Zero, Subtract All, Count Down/ Back, Count Up To, Doubles, Make 10, Bridge With 10, Subtract 10, Subtract 9, and Subtract 8. These strategies cover 90 basic subtraction facts along with Subtract 10 facts.

They may be used to provide effective support for the whole class or for intervention and resource groups. This set includes both color and black/ gray/ white options. In addition, small quarter page size mini-charts have been added. These may be hole punched and placed on rings to send home with individual students or to keep handy at school for easy reference.

This newest 2018 edition has anchor charts for both Count Down and Count Back so you can choose, as well as a single page chart with the Make Ten facts illustrated with ten frames.

This resource correlates with my subtraction strategy worksheets and flashcards. Please note that the color rabbit still looks great when printed in black/ white.

This resource includes 42 usable pages:

♦ 6 pages teacher information

♦ 14 pages color full-page anchor charts

♦ 4 pages color quarter page mini-charts

♦ 14 pages black/ gray/ white full page anchor charts

♦ 4 pages black/ white quarter page mini-charts

Subtraction Fact Mental Strategy Flashcards

This is a set of basic subtraction fact flashcards with cues to reinforce learned mental subtraction strategies with first and second graders. They correlate with my anchor charts and worksheets.

Each flashcard has a think bubble with a picture and/or word cue for the corresponding subtraction strategy.

There are at least 2 flashcard versions for each strategy except Count Down/ Back and Count Up To. There is a black and white version available for each strategy. The rabbits for Subtract 8 and 9 are still attractive when printed in black and white.

I would not expect anyone to copy them all. Choose the sets that you know will be most beneficial for your students. The pages are organized by strategy so there are blank spaces.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
