Subtraction Facts Baseball

★ 189 Subtraction Facts in All.

★ Prints nicely in black and white as well.

★ You can print back to back… it’s designed to match up perfectly. Just run off the fact baseballs, and then turn them face up in your paper tray and print out the plain baseball backings.

★ Then, just take each sheet to the paper cutter and cut each sheet into 12 square cards.

★ 2 sizes baseball diamonds to choose from (8 x 11 and 12 x 18).

★ 2 size baseball dice as well.

★ There is also a baseball spinner.

★ Includes 2 optional recording sheets that can be copied in grayscale for students to record in pencil, OR laminated for use with erasable markers.

★ 2 optional All-Star Subtraction Awards

Common Core Standard:

CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).

Directions:

Divide players into 2 teams.
Each team has a token/game piece.
Place balls face down on pitcher’s mound.
First player picks one ball.
If the player solves the fact correctly, s/he tosses the die or spins the spinner (dice and spinner included; just fold and tape/glue)
The player moves the team game piece according to what the die says:
1 base = a single
2 bases = a double
3 bases = a triple
4 bases = a homerun

Each time a run scores, students keep track on the scoreboard.

Note: To make the game progress more quickly, you can change the number of outs to 1 per inning rather than 3.

All subtraction facts to 18 on baseballs. Prints nicely in black and white as well. You can print back to back… it’s designed to match up perfectly. Game 1: Select the cards that are appropriate for your students. Place cards face down in a pile. Students roll a die to see how many cards they can pick. Students keep each card that they correctly solve. The game is over when all baseballs have been drawn. The winner is the student with the most baseballs.

Game 2: Select 10 pairs of facts with the same answers. Place those 20 cards face down in 4 rows of five. Students play Memory or Concentration, turning over 2 cards at a time and keeping them if they have the same sum. The game is over when all cards are gone. The winner is the student with the most baseballs. Keep cards that belong together in individual baggies.

Game 3: Select the facts that a group of students needs to practice. Students line up the baseballs as though they are on a path. This creates a “follow the path” type game. Each student has a game token. Students take turns rolling a number die, moving that number of spaces and solving the subtraction fact that is on the space where the student lands.
