Subtraction game - Gathering Goodies 1st grade math game, for centers or small groups
Gathering Goodies! is a great game to help first graders to learn subtraction up to 10. It would also be great for kindergardeners to become fluent within 5 and promotes number sense. It works well during math centers or any small group activity time. Directions on how to play, a game board and all the necessary playing cards are included in the pack. This game aligns with first grade Common Core State Standards. 1.OA.6. Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
Each subtraction “problem card” gives the answer in red, under the problem. That way the reader will know if the player gives the correct answer or not.
There is also a page with pictures of a squirrel, to copy on the opposite side of the problem card sheets. That way the cards are identified and correctly placed problem-side-down, in the correct box.
Get the students ready for the game by telling them they are all hungry squirrels, trying to gather as many goodies as they can, to store away for the winter. Their squirrel will earn an acorn card every time they get an answer correct.
