This multi-sensory modeling activity is designed as a supplement to my Subtraction Math Fact Fluency packets. Build It can be used in small groups or as a center for math workshop. Using unifix cubes, ten frames, or a rekenrek, students work to model the math facts. This activity is one of the first activities I use when introducing my students to a new set of math facts.
Math Fact Strategies covered include: Counting Back (Minus 0,1,2,3), Take All (Minus Itself), Using Doubles (Minus Half), Friends of Ten (Subtract From Ten), Neighbors: Count Up or Down, Back to Ten, Minus 10, Minus 9,
Prep: Print on colored cardstock or paper. I printed each strategy on its own color of cardstock for easy sorting. Cut and laminate cards for durability and for use with dry erase markers.
For use as an extension activity: Print on one color of cardstock and ask students to sort their models according to the strategy used.
