This pack is designed to teach children the Count On (to subtract) mental math strategy in one week.
Step one: Display the Poster and explain the strategy.
Step two: Guide students through the Guided Practice Problems. Work as a whole class, or in small groups.
Step three: Give students the first Practice Page with Visual Support. Review the example. As they work, ask students individually to explain how to use the strategy for one problem. Make note on the Record Sheet whether or not students are able to apply and explain the strategy. Students who are able to independently apply and explain the strategy should be given a Standard Practice Page the next day. Students who are not able to independently apply and explain the strategy should be given another Practice Page with Visual Support the next day. Students should complete one practice page each day.
Alternatively, have the students complete an Exit Ticket to assess their ability to apply and explain the strategy.
Step four: Send home the parent letter. Give students the Flash Cards to practice each night for homework. (Both color and black and white versions are included.)
Students complete one practice page each day. Play the Game. Assess students through individual interviews, exit tickets, or by listening in to students while playing the game. Use the Record Sheet to keep track of which students are/are not able to apply the strategy.
Optional: Consider using one of the standard practice pages as a timed assessment at the end of the week/unit.
Copy pages for use with your students.
