Problem solving can be one of the most difficult things to teach your kids. This mini unit will teach your students strategies to help them figure out when to subtract. This Powerpoint breaks subtraction word problems into three types;
1. Left Over Problems
2. Problems that Compare
3. Missing Part Problems
Each type includes question stems and at least three examples of those problems. (Some examples use pictures while others use Base 10 blocks.)
At the end, there are two assessment activities. The first is a sort. Your students will categorize 9 problems into the three types of subtraction word problems. The second assessment has your students actually drawing the picture to accompany the problem. They will also identify the type of subtraction word problem. Answer Keys are included.
*Please note, this unit does not include lessons on regrouping only problem solving. I do have a freebie on regrouping here,
