Given the minuend and difference, students use various strategies to determine the subtrahend. Examples: students use knowledge of fact families, knowledge of numerical expression, use a number line, or draw a picture.
The - sign is called a minus sign. This sign means subtract.
The = is called an equal sign. Just like addition, this shows the answer.
In subtraction, the number 15 is called a minuend. This is the number that
comes first and is usually the larger number. Unlike addition the 9 has a
different name than the 15. It is called a subtrahend and is usually the
smaller number. The 6 in this problem is called the difference. The difference
is the answer you got by subtracting two numbers.
Today you will work with subtraction equations and determine the subtrahend.
